Fluency Disorder (Stuttering): Stuttering is a communication disorder that causes disruptions in a person’s speech. “Stuttering” refers to the specific speech disruptions that are seen in people who stutter or to the overall communication difficulty that people who stutter may experience. This disorder is categorized into two types of behaviors: primary (core) and secondary. Core behaviors include symptoms like repetition of sounds, syllables, and/or complete sentences. Also, single sounds may be prolonged and/or airflows may be blocked during speech.Secondary behaviors develop over time as learned reactions to the core behaviors.Symptoms may include hesitations, interjections of sounds, syllables, or words, and motor movements associated with stuttering -such as eye blinking, loss of eye contact, and extraneous movements.
